Mike Hollingstead from Extreme Instability has been chasing storms for many years (his site is always a fascinating read for thrill-seekers). We featured his adventures before - see, for example, our article "Fog Storm Over Badlands". However this time, what you're going to see is going to blow you away - this is possibly the most epic sight on the whole Earth:  (image credit: Mike Hollingstead) The collision of two supercells, resulting in the enormous "tsunami in the sky" storm front With Mike Hollingstead's exclusive permission, we present to you June 19, 2011 McCook Nebraska Supercell:  Mike suggests playing "Exogenesis Symphony Pt 1: Overture" by Muse, while looking at these pictures... "If the storm could pick a song to have playing for it, it would pick that song.":  "I sat here just east of Alma NE and had my mind blown for 40 straight minutes, 10:35 to 11:15 before I had to even move again. It was still mind blowing through midnight." Then some soft clouds rolled in - "sorta like mother nature's blinds, partially open. See me, she says.":  Even if this thing did not produce tornadoes, it put itself right into the "Hall of Fame" of weirdest sights on Earth - read the whole story of storm chasing here Here is how this supercell (or rather two separate storms) evolved: One supercell (with beautiful tiered structure) being chased by the other... when two supercells collide, "they could be heading into crazy realms":  Once these two collided (partly merged, partly towered one over another), it produced a complex structure that "established its own vortex that didn't want to stop sucking up the stable layer below." -  During the next hour the otherwordly structure was still there, but it looked different - more like a stacked dessert cake, or some sort of a skirted mushroom:  "Still being an other-worldly sight. You really half felt, this thing is on the wrong planet right now." What's perhaps the strangest if that smaller funnel clouds formed way up there, between the layers of the structure, some reaching almost horizontally into the "belly of the beast".  Other sightings of "giant wave-like supercell clouds" Similar to the storm formation seen in Nebraska, this storm in Oklahoma has lightnings shooting from its "mouth". Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig y los pitufos han empatado este fin de semana con unas dignas recaudaciones, aunque muy probablemente por debajo de lo esperado por sus artífices. 'Cowboys & Aliens' (id, Jon Favreau, 2011) consigue la mínima aceptación por parte de la crítica, y un poco más por parte del público votante en la IMDb. Todo indica que Favreau sigue fiel a su estilo, correcto, sin tomar demasiados riesgos. Por estos lares la veremos el 2 de septiembre.
En cuanto a la adaptación cinematográfica de la serie de animación que formó parte de la infancia de algunos de nosotros, la cosa ha quedado bien clara. La crítica no la soporta, y el público votante ni la aprueba. Servidor aún no la ha visto y cada vez que pienso en ello tengo temblores fríos.
'Crazy Stupid Love' (id, Glenn Ficarra, John Requa, 2011) no ha conseguido la mismas cifras que las anteriores, pero sí ha sido el estreno mejor valorado de la semana. Steve Carell da vida a un hombre que cree tener una vida de ensueño, hasta que un día recibe una demanda de divorcio. Con la ayuda de un joven ligón empedernido, tratará de recuperar a su mujer. Críticas más que aceptables, y un público votante entusiasmado. Con Julianne Moore y Emma Stone en su reparto hay que verla, cosa que aquí podremos hacer a partir del 7 de octubre.

¿Cómo es que la naturaleza consigue combinar colores y formas de un modo que hasta nos resulta difícil de imaginar?. La anterior, es una pregunta que puede surgir al observar imágenes de la costa de la isla La Digue, la cuarta isla más grande de las islas Seychelles, un archipiélago que alguna vez visitáramos en islas como Aldabra.
En Seychelles, hay playas tropicales paradisíacas por demás bonitas, pero en la isla La Digue, las playas tienen la particularidad de que las rocas, erosionadas de un modo tan magistral, convierten al paisaje en una especie de obra de arte, una maravilla esculpida y combinada con tonalidades que van desde el turquesa del mar, a las arenas blancas y el verde intenso de la vegetación tropical. En la isla La Digue, encontraremos la playa más original del mundo, además de una de las más bellas:

Today this fleet is still used to aid ship navigation in the seas north of Siberia - but also for the purpose of elite tourism, which surely helps to pay the bills. The most powerful of all icebreakers - "50 years of Victory" (one of six "Arktika" class)- has two nuclear reactors and is capable of reaching North Pole in just a couple of days.  "Vaigach" and "Taimyr" Svetlana Bogdanova has recently returned from a very special trip on board the icebreaker "Vaigach" and provided us with these unique photographs. Thanks to her exclusive permission (including collection of photos from the seamen of the Murmansk Sea Shipping Company) we can now offer you a glimpse of what it really means to follow along the caravan of ships in the Northern seas, led by a colossal nuclear-powered vessel. See it moving in the dark of night, projecting a powerful light ahead, making the snow sparkle in a misty path, feel it tremble under your feet... Its sheer immensity is inspiring, making one think of heroic exploration of unknown lands, the stuff that kids should be dreaming about". "Vaigach" in the mist:  The blizzard is getting worse:   Unexpected Rescue: This truck got in trouble on treacherous ice, so a professional team quickly comes up with a plan:  The journey resumes:  Breaking the way for a caravan of ships:  "30 Days of Night"... Arriving into Dixon: a small town of about a thousand people -  Its population lives in the Arctic wasteland, enduring the most extreme climate. A significant part of Dixon has become a ghost town during Soviet years - and a series of ghastly buildings line up to haunt the endless night:   It's easy to start imagining vampires... but these buildings are long abandoned. Though one has to wonder about this cannon-looking thing left nearby:  Back to the Arctic trail Serene and wonderfully wide-format views along the way - the Svalbard archipelago:   Franz Josef Land has some fascinating rock formations:  And mammoth fossils are simply everywhere, just lying around (left). It looked imposing, but suffered two nuclear accidents while in operation till 1989, and now is being converted into a museum ship. Another milestone: "Arktika" became the first surface ship ever to reach the North Pole in 1977. "50 Years of Victory" - is the largest, most powerful icebreaker ever constructed.    (image credit: Quark Expeditions)  This lid covers a nuclear reactor:  Nuclear reactor room:  117 meters in length, the "50 Years of Victory" has TWO nuclear reactors, develops around 500,000 horse power, and its huge steel ice belt 5 meters wide can easily break through ice up to 2.5 meters (9.2 feet) thick. (The "victory" in its name is the Russian people's victory over the Nazis in 1945) And by the way, in case you're thinking that no ice can ever stop such behemoths, let me remind you that the nuclear icebreaker "Soviet Union" was trapped in ice for three days in 1998 (which is nothing compared to Mother Russia trapped in communism for 70 years) Here is that "Soviet Union" ship -  The rest of 10 nuclear icebreakers are described in detail here. Bears just wanna have... milk Polar bears lead pretty eventful life: from "romantic" courtships to intense family squabbles:  However, if they spot a passing ship, they will drop everything and try to get closer, knowing exactly what they want.  >They will surely start begging for their most favorite treat - condensed sweetened milk in cans: (not healthy of course, but simply irresistible)  They try to stretch their meal: one can will keep a bear occupied for up to 3 hours. After they lick the can clean, they start to chew on it, like some sort of chewing gum - to get that last whiff of flavor.
